Academic Updates
English Language Arts in the middle grades is where reading, writing, speaking, and listening come together. Students work with longer and more demanding texts — novels, articles, poetry, and primary sources — and learn to support what they think with evidence from what they read. We do this in a safe, caring, and culturally enriching environment that honors the traditions and values of the Navajo Nation.
Our teachers provide hands-on learning experiences that develop:
- Close reading and comprehension of complex texts
- Citing evidence to support an argument or interpretation
- Writing narrative, informative, and argumentative pieces through the full drafting and revision process
- Vocabulary, grammar, and academic language
- Discussion, presentation, and collaborative work with peers
- Navajo language and culture
We partner closely with families to ensure every student is prepared for success throughout their educational journey.
Support at Home
Parents can help by:
- Keep reading part of the day — 20–30 minutes of anything your student chooses, including magazines, articles, and graphic novels.
- Ask about what they are reading in class and have them explain a character’s choices or an author’s point of view.
- Ask “what makes you say that?” so they practice backing up an opinion with a reason.
- Check the school portal together for assignments and due dates, and help them keep an organization system.
- Encourage them to write outside of school — letters, journals, lyrics, or stories all count.
- Talk about their school day and the changes middle school brings.
- Limit screen time before bed and keep a consistent bedtime routine.
