Academic Updates

Fourth and Fifth grade is a time when students widen their circle of learning — becoming stronger readers, mathematicians, historians, and scientists. Just as we learn from the land, stories, and our elders, students are expected to read grade-level texts and practice moving through unfamiliar words and ideas with patience and courage. These skills will guide them far beyond the classroom.

This year is a year of “multiples” — multiple stories, multiple perspectives, multiple ways of thinking. In reading, students compare and analyze several texts to understand deeper meaning. In social studies, they explore many histories, events, and teachings of the Americas. In science, they study systems, models, change, and stability — mirroring the balance we see in nature. Math builds on third-grade foundations, strengthening multi-digit addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Each new skill adds to the bundle of knowledge they carry forward.

Support at Home

  • Talk Daily: Chat about school and their world to build connection, confidence, and learning.
  • Encourage Choice: Let kids read whatever excites them — including gaming guides, how-to articles, and infographics.
  • Prompt Thinking: Ask them to explain their ideas while reading, solving problems, or following instructions to boost comprehension and problem-solving skills.

Conversation Starters

Each morning, our class gathers for a Morning Meeting where we explore a “Question of the Day.” This routine gives students a safe space to speak, listen, and share their thinking. As students respond, they practice essential verbal skills — explaining ideas clearly, listening respectfully to others, and building confidence in expressing themselves. These daily conversations strengthen language development, social connection, and the ability to communicate in thoughtful, meaningful ways.
